La Rafle movie

During the March break,  I watched a movie called La Rafle. La Rafle is about the Vel D'Hiv roundup, which took place in July 1942.
The Vel D'Hiv was a mass arrest of Jews in Paris during the Nazi occupation of France. About 13,000 Parisian Jews were arrested and locked in the Velodrome D'Hiver (a bicycle stadium) for 5 days with no food and barely any water, before being sent to Drancy internment camp, and ultimately Aucshwitz. 31% of these people were children.

La Rafle tells the story of a young boy, Jo Weismann, and his friends as they try to survive the roundup. It also shows the Vel D'Hiv from the point of view of a Catholic girl studying to be a nurse. She becomes attached to Jo and his friends, especially one of Jo's friends younger brothers, Noe, and desperately tries to save them.

La Rafle not only shows facts of the Vel D'Hiv and other aspects of the Holocaust, but it takes you on a journey along with Jo. I'd recommend this movie to anyone because along with being educational, it's one of my favourite movies. As most Holocaust things are, it's eye-opening to see the emotional and physical pain people went through, along with the conditions and the way they were treated.

What Is An Outsider?

To me, an outsider is someone that doesn't fit in to what the majority of people say is "normal". An example of an outsider is Charlie in The Perks of Being A Wallflower. He doesn't fit in with the rest of the kids his age, and he's always on the outside. He sits back and watches while other people do things. This is the same for the greasers in The Outsiders, because they don't fit in with the rest of the teenagers, the Socs.

The Other Day, I Read...

The other day, I read a book written by Urve Tamberg called The Darkest Corner of the World. The book is about a 15 year old girl named Madli who lives in Tallinn, Estonia. It's set in the 1940's, when Soviet Russia was in control of the Baltic countries, and Germany was fighting for control of them. Madli is looking forward to getting away from the soldiers when she visits her grandparents in Hiiumaa, an island far from Tallinn, for the summer. Soon after Madli arrives in Hiiumaa, Germany gets closer and Russia steps up the rules. They send a notice saying that Madli's brother Kalju has to join the Red Army. After hearing this, Madli and her two brothers hide in the forest with a group of people fighting for Estonia's freedom. As the Red Army and the Nazi's get closer, Madli, Kalju and Peeter have to decide which side to fight for.
